In Brazil, the death toll from floods and mudslides last week has reached 755 people.

Soldiers and emergency workers are continuing to pull bodies from debris, after heavy rains sent an avalanche of mud, water and rocks through towns and villages in the southeast of the state.

With about 400 people still missing, the searchers expect the death toll to rise to more than 1000.

Nearly 14,000 people have been forced to abandon their homes in the region, either because they were destroyed or deemed unsafe.
