  • As a member of the Church of Scotland, Gordon Brown has no plans to convert to Catholicism like Tony Blair. But he is keen to court the pope, whose influence extends across 1.1 billion Catholics worldwide. As chancellor in 2007 he met Pope Benedict and gave him a book of sermons by his father. He used the meeting to promote a scheme to provide lifesaving vaccines to children in the developing world. Last year Brown wrote to the pontiff asking him to help the world meet the UN millennium development goals.
