Speaking at Assumption College in Massachusetts, Archbishop Charles Chaput of Philadelphia argued that Catholic universities should proudly support and advance the Church’s distinctive scholarly heritage, and use Catholic thought to transform American culture.

“Instead of Catholics converting the culture, the culture too often bleached out the apostolic zeal in Catholics while leaving the brand label intact,” the archbishop lamented. The Church should not be reticent about promoting Catholic ideas, he said, noting that “Catholic higher education is heir to the greatest intellectual, moral and cultural patrimony in human history.”
